What is the deal with disposable gloves?

Thanks to you, dear hair technicians and cosmeticians, the topic of gloves has become a matter of the heart for us. Since questions pop up quite often then we decide to peek into the world of disposable gloves and talk about it in detail.

Your concern about choosing good gloves is completely understandable — what kind of gloves to choose, are they comfortable, durable, made of a material suitable for you and of course — does the “right” pack of gloves pay more than 10 euros? Let me just say in advance that nope, the price is not quite so.

Of course you gotta start from the beginning and that is the material. Nitrile, vinyl or natural latex gloves? By the way you can let the choice of color be the last one 🙂

Nitrile gloves – the most popular modern choice of material for disposable gloves. They are synthetic but highly resilient when working with different chemicals. In addition nitrile gloves are made to stretch enough to be comparable to latex gloves.

Latex glovescosmeticians favorites and the only material that can resist acetone. Probably that is why cosmeticians favor them 🙂 In addition latex gloves are the only ones that are biodegradable (nature’s friend’s favorite). Cons can be the risk of allergic reactions and low protection against penetration. Pros are comfort, stretchability and tactile sensitivity.

Vinyl glovesBusiness owner’s favorites since the price is very low and you probably won’t wear them yourself! Used primarily in food manufacturing and where tactile sensitivity is not a high priority.

This is a small overview of materials. Added to that it is very important to check the product markings. A short explanation of what AQL, CAT, CAT2 and CAT3 mean is here:

AQL: All medical gloves need to be tested and the mark of quality is Acceptance Quality Limit. The lower the number the higher the quality. A very good mark is 1.5. We don’t recommend using gloves of a higher mark.

CAT: It is very important to check the products risk category. The higher the number the better the protection and we would not recommend gloves lower than CAT2.

CAT 2 – Protects against medium risks and meant primarily for protecting the patient.

CAT 3 – Protects against high risks like chemicals and microorganisms and is meant to protect the user. Products of this category have passed EC type evaluation.

Finally color 🙂 Not at all unimportant since the color of the glove can affect the mood and the color bridge between clothing 🙂

This of course does not cover everything about the deep and wide world of disposable gloves. Hopefully you got the first directions about what kind of gloves you need for your everyday work. Certainly the comfort and goodness does not only come down to price but more importantly the markings and compliance with standards.
